The Eagle

We just got back from L’Aquila.
It’s in Central Italy, less than 2 hours from Rome.
Far from the crowds
Far less visited
Far more appealing
Why walk the tourist trail?
We first visited several years ago, staying at the unique Sextantio Albergo Diffuso, in nearby Santo Stefano di Sessanio.
I recall our first time in the city centre, thinking it was probably the most silent city that we had ever been in.
Where were all the people?
This time there were signs of change. More people. But still no tourists.
Perhaps that will change when L’Aquila is the capital of culture in 2026.
There’s been an impressive restoration effort. Some re-building is completed. And we got a sense that many years after the devastating earthquake of 2009, that L’Aquila is rising.
The eagle has landed.
Which lesser known place have you visited recently?

Making a note of L’aquila too – Italy is definitely calling, and we never like to walk the tourist trail, at least not with our own people! It’s fine if it’s a place that all the locals rave about!
Have a great week!

Can thoroughly recommend L’Aquila, off the tourist trail for now but it will be marketed for the 2026 Capital of Culture. Maybe we will meet there 😉
