Reflections

“The challenge is to be yourself

in a world that’s trying to make you like everyone else’

I’m thinking back on 2018.

It was a challenging year but that’s o.k. We don’t need easy.

I was raised Roman Catholic. I took my confirmation as a teenager. I remember my dad giving me a small metal plaque that day, about the size of a credit card. On it were the words ‘No road worth travelling, is easily travelled’. I have carried these words through my whole adult life.

So, what did I learn this year?

Firstly I learned that you can make dreams a reality. It takes hard work, creative thinking and determination. Kind words of encouragement, from supportive souls helps too.

Secondly, I learned that you can live differently. Your ideas might be challenging to other, more conventional thinkers, but you must be true to yourself and live life on your own terms.

I’m reminded of a greeting card that two of our closest friends gave to us when we got married. On the cover it read:

“The challenge is to be yourself , in a world that’s trying to make you like everyone else’.

It’s very true. Without doubt, its easier to follow an ordinary path. But what if you just don’t want ordinary?

Next I learned that you can do things that you have never done before. In each country, with every move, we have kept learning new skills in life; we change.

The biggest lesson this year has been about people. After many years of travelling and working in different places, you get to know a lot of people. You recognise the people who are truly in your corner, those who want you to fly, and to all of you, who have shown us love and encouragement this year I send a massive MWAH.

Which life lessons do you take from this year?

As we go into 2019, my wish is to share great times with great people, to surround ourselves with positive people, those who uplift. And of course, to keep travelling.

What are your hopes for 2019?
